The Art of Becoming Dangerous

Ever wonder what it actually takes for a "normal person" to decide what to do when disappearing isn't enough?

When I began researching how someone without special training, underground connections, or unlimited resources could vanish, the answer was sobering: it's nearly impossible. Digital footprints, financial trails, facial recognition, cell phone tracking—our modern world is built to prevent exactly what Mia needed to do—disappear. Across five books and 2000 pages, she doesn't just learn how to vanish; she learns something far more powerful.

Three hard truths about transforming from the hunted to the hunter:

1. Your existing skills are weapons waiting to be discovered.

Mia spent years directing commercials where every angle mattered. When she makes escape plans, those skills seamlessly transfer. Story becomes the basis. Camera angles become sight lines. Blocking becomes tactical positioning. Her ability to envision multiple takes of the same scene lets her anticipate what her hunters will do next. The woman who once staged product launches now stages disappearances—for herself and others who need to vanish. Who knew your superpower might be hiding in your day job.

2. Rock bottom has a basement (and sometimes that's where you find your fight).

Book One: Mia can barely name, let alone comprehend, what happened to her. Book Two: She discovered that helping others escape taught her new ways to fight back. Book Three: Mia learned to shoot but with shaky hands. Book Four: Jake's assessment of her shooting and fighting skills gave her the courage to believe she could fight back when running wasn’t working. The progression is slow, realistic, earned. Because real transformation takes time.

3. The biggest battle is with your own programming.

Mia's childhood trauma gave her the ability to forget so completely, it's like things never happened. But when forgetting isn't enough, when she needs to remember to survive, that defensive wall begins to crack. What's hidden behind it takes five books to reveal. Sometimes our greatest survival mechanism becomes our biggest obstacle to truly living.

The scene that started it all. Picture this: A woman hears her enraged husband storming up the stairs. A brief history of extreme abuse tells her she has seconds. She grabs a backpack that she hasn’t properly prepared, buckles into a rappelling harness she's hidden in her closet, knocks out a third-floor window screen, and drops into the night. Bad form. Lands on her butt. But she's alive and running.

That graceless landing? That's where transformation begins. Not with perfection, but with the messy, desperate decision to save yourself no matter what it looks like.
